Context Matters

Agriculture, Slaves, and the Church's Identity

Episode Summary

Dr. Carmen Imes joins us for the second half of our conversation about her book Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters. We talk about the subtitle of her book: Why Sinai Still Matters. If that is the case, how does the modern church engage with laws that rub against our modern sensibilities? How does a modern, technological society interpret biblical agrarian laws? And what about the slavery laws? Dr. Imes walks us through the right way to contextualize the laws and then interpret them for the modern audience. Context Matters!

Episode Notes

Last week we talked about the command "Do not to take the name of the Lord your God in vain" that can be more accurately translated “You shall not bear the name of Yahweh your God in vain.” This week we discuss how Sinai still matters to a modern church. How doe we interpret some tricky laws so that we still Bear God's Name?
