Context Matters

Do Not Bear God's Name in Vain

Episode Summary

Dr. Carmen Imes joins me to explore the book of Exodus for issues of Identity. What happens when the Israelite slaves become the children of God? While at the foot of Mount Sinai, does God tell the people not to take his name in vain or to bear his name in vain? Dr. Imes takes us through the beautiful calling of Bearing God's Name and why that still matters today.

Episode Notes

Dr. Imes' thesis is that the command "Do not to take the name of the Lord your God in vain" can be more accurately translated “You shall not bear the name of Yahweh your God in vain.” Dr. Imes then explains the logic behind Bearing God’s Name (also the title of her book) and what that means for the modern church today.
