This week I talk with Zak Mishriky who, among many other things, owns a shop in the Old City of Jerusalem. Zak tells us about growing up in Anathoth (Jeremiah the prophet's hometown!) when it belonged to Jordan. After 1967, the town belonged to Israel. Talk about a fascinating way to experience the place of the Bible in the midsts of shifting political boundaries!
I like to send my students to talk to Zak and have a chance to listen carefully to how people grow up and what their connection to land is. Zak has a great and complicated history. He clearly tells people how his Christian identity informs who he is as a Palestinian. He also encourages non-locals to remember the conflict over there is not Jewish vs. Muslim but Israeli vs. Palestinian. Listen in to hear how he explains the difference.
